Toots retires after 46 years' service with Halstan
7 March 2014
Sheila Coster, affectionately known to all as 'Toots' retired from the Amersham-based company, Halstan after nearly 47 years' service. Toots joined Halstan straight from school at the age of 15 and worked initially in the music processing department. She later moved to the bindery where she learnt all aspects of binding music books.
During her time, Toots has seen many changes at Halstan as the company has grown through various acquisitions to become an independent media group. Always known for its specialization in music, Halstan's latest acquisition is a state-of-the-art digital printing company in Germany, also specializing in printing music.
Halstan Chairman, Christopher Smith, commented:
It is not every day that you stand up in front of your staff to speak about someone retiring after this length of service and although we are of similar age, Toots started here 10 years before me. The fact that Halstan not only survives but continues to grow when many companies in our industry have disappeared is a testament to the quality and commitment of the staff we have here in Amersham. We will miss Toots enormously, she brightened up everyone's day with her smile and her mischievous sense of humour. Her retirement brings to the end an era of working with the Coster family. During her time at Halstan, we have employed her mother, father, sister, brother-in- law, nephew and niece – we are a family business in every sense of the word and I will always remember the musical boxer shorts that she gave to me one Christmas. I wish her a very happy and healthy retirement.
On her last day, Toots provided food for the entire workforce which was laid out at various tables around the company dressed with balloons. She was presented with some gardening vouchers from the staff and an oak dining table and chairs from the company.
