Halstan is a fourth generation family run printers and specialist bookmakers.
Halstan was founded in 1919 when Harold Smith (the 'Hal' in Halstan) and his brother Stanley ('Stan') started a music pewter-plate engraving business in the basement of their North London home.
The brothers envisaged and developed a new method of engraving music, embracing the new and exciting technology of the day, photolithography. The Halstan Process was born and this unique stencil method of engraving music soon became an industry standard. Originally only supplying negatives to publishers the brothers, driven by customer demand, very soon started physical printing and book manufacturing.
The services we offer today continue to be driven by innovation and the changing needs of our customers. Our business is built on traditional values combined with modern thinking that continually questions convention, offering our customer advancements, in e-based solutions and digital production. This, combined with our highly skilled workforce and a loyal supplier base, delivers what we believe to be an exciting, modern and high value proposition.
Over the past one hundred years our manufacturing facilities have grown somewhat from our humble beginnings in North London with manufacturing plants in the UK, Europe and North America, meaning we can offer centrally managed international book production. Whilst Halstan fiercely retains its heritage and strong links to the music publishing industry, the business over the years has expanded into other markets – paperback books, academic journals, instruction manuals, textbooks, brochures and notebooks which we produce with the same passion.
Our ethos is to build long-standing partnerships with our customers to become, not only a producer of quality books, but also a trusted extension of their businesses, proven by decades of continual relationships with many of our customers.
